John MacDonell (born April 2, 1956) is a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia for the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party. He was first elected in the 1998 election, and was re-elected in 1999, 2003, 2006 and 2009. Following the 2009 election, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Natural Resources.[2]

Before politics

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of Alfred C. MacDonell and Kathleen T. Gordon,[1] MacDonell was educated at Acadia University and Saint Mary's University.[2] Before entering politics, he worked on a dairy farm and taught biology at Hants East Rural High School from 1985 to 1998.[1]
